In order to get your In-Portal installation up and running you need three pieces of software - an archiving tool to uncompress the In-Portal files after you download them from http://www.intechnic.com, an FTP client to upload and download your files to/from your server, and finally a text editor to edit In-Portal files in order to customize the appearance of your particular installation.
Our recommendations for software to use are:
1. Archiving tool - WinRar - http://www.rarlab.com/download.htm
2. FTP client - AbsoluteFTP - http://www.vandyke.com/download/absoluteftp/index.html
3. Text editor - EditPlus - http://www.editplus.com/download.html
These are just recommendations based on the positive experience we, at Intechnic, have had using these tools. Feel free to use your favorite tool if they differ from the ones listed.
Given that you have the types of tools mentioned above, you need to take the following steps in order to complete your In-Portal installation:
1. Login to your account at http://www.in-portal.net/ and download the archive files for the In-Portal platform and all modules that you wish (and have permissions) to install.
2. Now that you have the In-Portal files, use WinRar to extract them somewhere on your hard drive. It is easiest to right-click on the archive file and select 'Extract Here', which will extract the files in the archive in the current folder. It is very important that you uncompress your In-portal platform files (i. e. in-portal_x_x_x.zip or portal_x_x_x.tar.gz) first, and then continue by uncompressing the files for the remaining modules you will be installing. The order in which you uncompress the module files does not matter as long as you have uncompressed the In-Portal platform files first. By the time you are done uncompressing, an 'in-portal' folder should appear wherever you decided to uncompress the In-Portal archive files.
3. Start AbsoluteFTP or a similar program, create a connection to your FTP server and navigate to your site folder. This is where you need to copy the In-Portal files you extracted from the archives in step 2. It is easiest to navigate to the files on your local machine by using the window on the left-hand side of AbsoluteFTP and drag them to your site folder on the FTP (right-hand side).
If you would like for In-Portal to be installed at the root of your site, go inside the 'in-portal' folder on your machine and drag all the files and folders from there to your web site folder. In this case, if your server address is http://www.myURL.com, people will be able to access your In-Portal web site by simply going to http://www.myURL.com.
If you would like for In-Portal to be installed to its own separate folder on the server, simply drag the whole 'in-portal' folder (without first going inside) to your web site folder. In that case, if your server address is http://www.myURL.com, people will be able to access your In-Portal web site by going to http://www.myURL.com/in-portal.
4. Using a web browser, go to In-Portal's installation script (SERVER_ADDRESS/in-portal/admin/install.php or SERVER_ADDRESS/admin/install.php) and follow the instructions onscreen. If you have any problems, consult the In-Portal user manual found at http://www.in-portal.net/templates/manual.pdf or contact Intechnic Support by logging into your account at http://www.intechnic.com/myaccount/ and opening a support ticket.
